Nature Trust Malta and Atlas Insurance partner on Water for Wildlife initiative

Atlas Insurance is proud to announce a new partnership with Nature Trust Malta to support the Water for Wildlife project. Funded through the Atlas Insurance Community Involvement Fund, this environmental initiative aims at safeguarding Malta’s native biodiversity through the provision of sustainable water sources for wildlife.

One of the most pressing challenges faced by Malta’s native fauna is dehydration as a result of prolonged dry periods that leave many species struggling to find accessible sources of clean water, putting additional pressure on already vulnerable wildlife populations. To respond to this need, the project will establish about 50 specially designed water stations across Malta and Gozo. As part of this initiative, members of TeamAtlas also participated in a pottery workshop, where they created a number of these water bowls to support this initiative.

Placed primarily in green and semi-natural areas, as well as selected urban locations where wildlife is frequently sighted, the stations will be maintained by trained volunteers and refilled with clean water regularly. The water stations will consist of custom-made, durable pottery bowls designed specifically for wildlife use, providing a sustainable and non-plastic alternative suited to outdoor conditions. Each station will feature a QR code directing the public to further information about the initiative, while selected sites will also include motion-sensor cameras to help monitor wildlife activity and support biodiversity research.

Catherine Calleja, Chair of the Atlas Insurance Community Involvement Fund Committee, explained: “Through the Fund, we support initiatives that help Malta address the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Water for Wildlife project contributes to SDG 15 – Life on Land by strengthening local ecosystems and addressing biodiversity loss, while also supporting SDG 6 and SDG 12 through the responsible management of natural resources. Its impact goes beyond a single goal, bringing environmental action and community engagement together. The SDGs are not just policy markers, but a guide for practical action, something reflected in TeamAtlas taking part in the first workshop to help create the water stations.”

Nature Trust Malta President Vincent Attard stated: “The outstanding CSR support from Atlas staff for the Water for Wildlife project has been truly inspiring. As climate change leads to increasingly hot and prolonged dry periods, many animals – including hedgehogs, shrews, and lizards – are struggling to find accessible sources of water. This project plays a vital role in helping wildlife survive the hottest months of the year by providing reliable access to drinking water when it is needed most. Through this initiative, Atlas staff are making a meaningful and tangible difference to the wellbeing of local wildlife. This also reduces calls to the Nature Trust Wildlife Rescue Team that result from dehydration.”

The Water for Wildlife initiative is one of several community projects supported through the Atlas Insurance Community Involvement Fund following the 2025 Call for Applications, which will guide the Fund’s work in the coming years. Atlas Insurance will also be collaborating with Nature Trust Malta on a second project, which is set to be launched later this year, further strengthening the partnership and the shared commitment to meaningful social and environmental impact across Malta.
